MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 15, 2013) – A member of the 6th Philippine Contingent to Golan Heights (6PCGH) has been awarded the Peacekeeper of the Month Award in a simple ceremony during a Command Briefing at the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) Headquarters at Camp Fauoar in Syria.

Lieutenant Colonel Nolie Anquillano, Commanding Officer of the Philippine Contingent, reported that Technical Sergeant Herman Galiza, of the Philippine Battalion (PHILBATT) was awarded by UNDOF Chief, Major General Iqbal Singh Singha, for exemplary performance and devotion to duty rendered as bus driver for the Austrian and Croatian Contingents rotation convoy from Camp Faouar to Damascus International Airport on November 28 last year.

The convoy, comprised of 25 vehicles, came under heavy fire by anti-government forces while on its way to the airport. Galiza immediately accelerated his vehicle to secure and keep his fourteen Austrian passengers safe and out of danger.

The Peacekeeper of the Month Award is usually granted to the deserving soldier in UNDOF for exemplary performance of duty.

The 6PCGH assumed peacekeeping duties in Golan Heights on November 19, 2012, relieving the 5th Philippine Contingent.

“This award will reflect on how the 6th Philippine Contingent to Golan Heights performed well in its mandated tasks and mission. Likewise, this will boost the morale of the officers, men and women of the Philippine Battalion,” Anquillano said.

“TSgt. Herman Galiza’s bravery and exemplary performance in the line of duty are truly remarkable and worth noting. He highlighted the gallantry and selflessness of each and every Filipino soldier at home or anywhere in the world. He truly deserves the award, commendation and recognition of the Community of Nations. The Philippines is proud of you,” Philippine Ambassador to Israel Generoso D.G. Calonge said.
