DAVAO CITY – Police arrested 2 men who sold illegal drugs to undercover agents just outside the office of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, who publicly declared war against the drug menace in the country.
Police said Dexter Dumalat, 18, and Oliver Alonzo, 32, were immediately arrested and taken into custody after they sold amphetamine hydrochloride or shabu to the agents during a sting operation outside the City Hall.
Anti-drug agents also recovered several sachets of shabu and marked money they had used in buying the drugs from the men who are facing criminal charges for violating the country’s Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 or Republic Act Number 9165.
But in Surallah town in South Cotabato, drug users have voluntarily surrendered to the police ahead of Duterte’s formal takeover of the presidency. At least 4 dozen people, including minors, have flocked to the police stations the past two weeks to turn themselves in and promised to stay away from illegal drugs.
Duterte has urged civilians to help his government fight illegal drugs and even offered hefty bounties for those who can arrest or destroy drug lords and pushers if they fight back.
Police also launched Oplan Tok-Hang (Operation Plan Toktok-Hangyo) where cops go to houses of suspected drug pushers and users and convince them to stop their illegal activities or risk of being arrested.
In Davao City, several drug pushers had been killed in what police said was the result of a shootout during anti-drug sting operations. (Mindanao Examiner)
