CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Police have arrested Saturday one of the ambushers of a Filipino lawmaker in Misamis Oriental province in northern Mindanao.
Police said the 52-year Dominador Tumala is being linked to the December 11 attack that killed 4 people and wounded three others, including Iligan City Rep. Vicente Belmonte in Laguindingan town in Misamis Oriental province where the alleged gunman was arrested.
There were no other details about the arrest of Tumala, but police said the suspect is a native of Zamboanga del Norte’s Sergio Osmeña town.
Police said Tumala is currently being interrogated by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Iligan City.
Gunmen ambushed Belmonte’s convoy along the highway in Laguindingan town. Belmonte just arrived at the Laguindingan airport from Manila and his convoy was heading to Iligan City when gunmen sprayed his vehicles with automatic weapons.
The motive of the attack is still unknown, but the politician is said to be eyeing the mayoralty post in Iligan City in the 2016 national elections.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the ambush, but the province is also a known lair of communist rebels. (Mindanao Examiner)
