ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police are holding a 40-year old man who was suspected of beheading his own father and stealing his money worth over P300,000 in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.
Police said it is now investigating Roderico Bernardo for the brutal murder of his 74-year old father whose body was recovered on Thursday outside his thatched hut in the village of Capisan.
Bernardo denied the accusations against him and said he last saw his father on their farm, just several meters away from house where the body and head had been found.
Police also recovered a blood-stained bolo in Bernardo’s house believed used in the murder of the old man. Blood stains were also scattered in the house raising suspicion that the elder Bernardo was killed there and that his body had been dragged outside.
The man’s wife, Felipa, described his husband as frugal, who always carry all his money in a bag and trusted no one, not even his own family. She said she had asked money repeatedly from his husband for her medicines, but had been ignored.
The money that Bernardo carried with him is still missing. The woman said the money came from farm animals that Bernardo had sold. She said her husband was also planning to buy a mini truck. (Ely Dumaboc)
