POLICE ARE set to file charges against a man who staged his own kidnapping to extract ransom from his family in Zamboanga City.
Naguib Puyong demanded P1 million from his family, but he was nabbed by police agents at a branch of Palawan Express Padala in Zamboanga Sibugay province while collecting some P2,000 in medical money sent by his children.
Puyong was recently arrested after his family sought the help of the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) of the Philippine National Police and set up a trap that led to his capture. During interrogation, Puyong admitted to have faked his own kidnapping.
Mayor Beng Climaco welcomed the filing of the case against Puyong, who is a resident of Barangay Licomo, stressing that the man should not be considered a victim, but a suspect and a perpetrator of the crime.

She thanked the police and the military, particularly the AKG, for their immediate efforts in responding to the incident. She also appealed to citizens to do away with situations that may cause alarm and scandal and put Zamboanga in a bad light.
“We appeal to residents, do not cause alarm and scandal to the people, we do not need that,” said the Mayor, who expressed dismay over the reported fake kidnapping which had caused undue alarm not only to the resident, but to the authorities as well. “The authorities exhausted all means to investigate and to undertake rescue efforts only to find out that the incident was just a drama. Life may be very challenging and difficult, but please know that we have a government that is ready to help,” she said. (Zamboanga Post)
