MARAWI CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 12, 2012) – A lone gunman, who is suspected follower of a politician, killed two women, one of them was an ardent supporter of a rival politician in the southern Philippine province of Lanao del Sur, during the ongoing registration of voters Thursday in the Muslim autonomous region, officials said.

Officials said the gunman shot the women – one of the Saed Guro, a follower of the local mayor Itomama Guro, of Lumbaca-Unayan town, in an attack in the village of Dilausan.

“The assailant escaped after the shooting and authorities are tracking down the perpetrator,” Army Lt. Col. Daniel Lucero, commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, told the Mindanao Examiner.

The motive of the attack is still unknown, but Lucero said it could be politically motivated.

He said soldiers and policemen also arrested three wanted members of a kidnap syndicate after they tried to register as a voter in the Saguiran town.

The trio – Lito Acasar, Macud Acasar, and Langagun Acasar – are all facing criminal charges, Lucero said.

The Commission on Elections has ordered a general registration of voters in the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao and the cities of Marawi and Lamitan in preparation for the synchronized elections in May next year. (Mindanao Examiner)
