ProGay fetes Transgender Day of Remembrance to mark Laude’s murder

Editor November 21, 2014
Progay

MANILA – The progressive organization of gay men and women, ProGay Philippines on Friday marked the global observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance or TDOR at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus which coincided on the 40th day after the murder of Filipino transgender Jennifer Laude allegedly by US Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton.

Jefferson Laude, ProGay spokesperson, said: “Sa araw na ito ng Transgender Day of Remembrance, patuloy na nagluluksa ang ProGay sa brutal na pagpaslang sa aking tiyahin na si Jennifer. Tumatangis kami sa mga insulto na pinupukol sa kanyang alaala, na pinapalala ng kamanhiran ng papet na rehimen ni Aquino sa kagalingan ng LGBT (“On this Day of Remembrance, ProGay mourns the brutal murder that my Auntie Jennifer endured, and the insults that her memory continues to suffer under an uncaring puppet president.)

“Patuloy natin isulong ang ating adbokasiya na wakasan ang pagkamuhi sa mga transgender sa Pilipinas.” (We must keep on working to abolish hatred against transgenders in the Philippines and worldwide) Laude added.

TDOR was started in the United States to honor Rita Hester who was killed in November 1999. The Europe-based Trans Murder Monitoring Project reported that 226 transgenders were murdered between September 2013 and September 2014, and recorded 32 murders from the Philippines. At least 3 deaths reported in the media were added in October which includes Jennifer’s case.

Progay members maintain that the military agreements between the US and Philippine governments must be abolished to prevent future gruesome crimes that the American military and their ex-military contractors can inflict on Filipinos.

Laude slammed President Benign Aquino for siding with the US and asserting the continuance of the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. She said that this exposes Aquino’s slavishness to American interests despite the horrible death that her aunt Jennifer met when she went out with Pemberton on October 11. (Mindanao Examiner)
