THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT is scouting for idle lots where it can put up public parking buildings to help ease the worsening traffic congestion in Zamboanga, according to City Administrator Apple Go.
She said the Local Traffic Ordinance is also undergoing a careful study to amend some of its provisions. “The Code has to be dynamic in light of the changing times,” she said in a statement. The proposed amendments include the establishment of loading and unloading zones as well as jeep terminals for both east and west coast bound public utility vehicles and routes will be properly identified according to the demand of the riding public. Go said the transport associations are also coming up with storage areas.
She said the City Government is to introduce new measures to address traffic violations and impose road discipline in the streets.

She said while the City Government maintains that there shall be no phase out tricycles, the transport modernization program of the administration of Mayor Beng Climaco will benefit thousands of legitimate tricycle drivers who can now file a loan with lending institutions to upgrade or purchase additional tricycle units through their cooperatives. Nearly 200 tricycle drivers have already applied for the modernization program.
Go said the Local Transport Public Route Plan, a requirement of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, is about to be completed. She said the modernization program will soon cover passenger jeepneys as well.
Associations of jeepney drivers and operators have welcome the proposed modernization program of the Climaco administration. Go said she is confident that the plans will be achieved within Climaco’s third and last term. “That is the goal, it can be achieved,” she said. (Zamboanga Post)
