
DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 27, 2013) – A Magnitude 5.3 quake shook the southern Mindanao province of Davao del Sur before dawn Sunday, but authorities have reported no damage or injuries, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported.
It said the quake was reported at around 1.31 a.m. near the town of Jose Abad Santos.
The agency said the quake was tectonic in origin and was traced at about 80 kilometers under earth.
The Philippines sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer area where large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
It has more than 400 volcanoes and sometimes called the circum-Pacific seismic belt. (Mindanao Examiner)
