
COTABATO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / June 2, 2013) – A moderate earthquake was reported late Sunday in the southern Philippine city of Cotabato, but authorities said there were no reports of injuries.
The epicenter of the 3.2 magnitude was traced 49 kilometers east of Cotabato.
Authorities said the origin of the earthquake was tectonic, about 33 kilometers deep.
It was the second earthquake recoded on Sunday after a 4.3 magnitude hit North Cotabato province.
On Saturday, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake destroyed houses and small structures in Carmen town and injured at least 8 children.
The Philippines sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer area where large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
It has more than 400 volcanoes and sometimes called the circum-Pacific seismic belt. (Mindanao Examiner)
