PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 27, 2012) – The southern Philippine region of Mindanao was shaken with two tremors, but civil authorities on Sunday reported no casualties or injuries.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said a 3.3 magnitude quake hit the town of Cateel in Davao Oriental at around 5.48 a.m. It said the earthquake was tectonic in origin.
It said a stronger quake, which registered at 6.6 in the Richter scale, was also reported in the province of Sarangani late Sunday.
The quake, which occurred at around 11.05 p.m., was also tectonic in origin. It was felt in Davao City, General Santos City, Koronadal City and the towns of Tupi and Polomolok in South Cotabato province.
Local residents said they also felt the temblor in Zamboanga City.
The Philippines sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a 40,000-kilometer area where large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean.
It has more than 400 volcanoes and sometimes called the circum-Pacific seismic belt. (Mindanao Examiner)
