ZAMBOANGA CITY – Renowned artist and painter Rameer Tawasil opened his 8th solo art show at Lantaka Hotel in Zamboanga City dubbed as “The Poetry of the Sea Butterflies.”

The exhibit features 9 of Tawasil’s finest works in a span of two years and several pieces – which depicted colorful Muslim vintas – were immediately sold even before the formal opening of the event.

Among the guests who graced the event were local councilman Vincent Paul Elago and Spanish priest Angel Calvo. The art show, which opened March 29, will the whole month of April.

Tawasil thanked Elago for making his painting as part of the lawmaker’s new art collections.

For his part, Elago said Tawasil’s paintings were awesome. “The tedious work and vibrant colors portray what our city truly is – lively, unpredictable and mystical. The vintas in your paintings actually are more of the accurate kind used by the ancient Badjaos which used only 2 to 3 colors in their sails. I find the importance given to the vintas as timely.”

“The vintas have become a symbol of our city as it has been incorporated in most promotional media materials about our city. Many tourists, who come to our city, expect to see them but unfortunately, in most cases, end up not seeing any of them except for the sails which are being displayed in some hotels and resorts. So to you I say congratulations for the amazing works of art and for helping in the revival of the vintas of Zamboanga City.”

Calvo, a known peace advocate, also said many good things about Tawasil and his paintings.

The multi-awarded Tawasil, a native of Sulu province, has hundreds of art pieces – many depicting the rich and colorful heritage of the Muslims, peace and the environment.

Tawasil was born in the village of Karungdung in the town of Kalinggalan Caluang and obtained his Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the Western Mindanao State University in Zamboanga City.

He is best known for using bright, strong, and bold colors in his paintings. The foundation of his art is “okkil” (in Tausug; “okir” in Maranao), a design form indigenous to the Muslim groups in Mindanao as seen in their woodcarvings, brassware, and textiles, among others.

His masterpieces adorn galleries in London and Kuching, Malaysia and private collections in Germany, Korea, the United States and the Philippines.

Tawasil has been involved in more than 30 art group shows in abroad and the Philippines and his local exhibitions have been held at the main gallery of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Vargas Museum in the University of the Philippines, National Commission for Culture and the Arts Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Manila, and various private galleries.

Tawasil also organizes art shows and directs musical concerts on his advocacy on peace and the environment, and conducts art workshops on recycled and environmental art. (Mindanao Examiner)
