ZAMBOANGA CITY – A member of the army intelligence was killed in an ambush by Abu Sayyaf rebels in the southern Filipino province of Sulu, officials said Monday.
Officials said the soldier was travelling on a motorcycle in the village called Danag in Patikul town when the rebels attacked him January 18.
No other details were made available about the victim, except that he was a member of an intelligence unit and married to a local woman.
The name of the soldier was not made available by the army, but other reports identified the slain intelligence man as Arjan Punzalan.
Patikul is a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf which is being blamed by the military and police as behind the spate of terrorism and ransom kidnappings in the restive region. (Mindanao Examiner)
