Rebels bomb power pylon in Southern Philippines

COTABATO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 9, 2014) – Suspected rebels bombed, but failed to topple a power pylon in the southern Philippine province of Maguindanao.

The 6th Infantry Division has blamed the attack on the tower to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters who are waging a separatist war in the restive region of Mindanao.

It said the bombing targeted the steel pylon of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines in the town of Sultan Kudarat.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, but previous bombings of power pylons were also blamed by the army to the larger Moro Islamic Liberation Front which is currently negotiating peace with Manila.

NGCP is a private corporation solely responsible for the operation and maintenance of the country’s power transmission network.

Last September, rebels also blasted a steel pylon in the same town cutting electricity supply in several provinces. (Mindanao Examiner)
