KORONADAL CITY – Suspected communist rebels swooped down on a quarry site in Koronadal City in southern Philippines and torched heavy equipment in a daring attack that was undetected by security forces.
There were no reports of casualties, but the rebels belonging to the New People’s Army ransacked the area and escaped with their loot, including weapons taken from the quarry in the village of Concepcion. The attack occurred despite a unilateral truce and ongoing peace talks with Manila.
The NPA did not issue any statement, but has been active in collecting so-called revolutionary taxes from business establishments and those that refused to pay were threatened by rebels, who are fighting for a separate state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
