ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY – A commuter van driver was killed after he tried to fight off two robbers, who also shot and wounded another passenger and his two-year daughter, in a daring heist in Zamboanga Sibugay province in southern Philippines, police said on Monday.
Police said the robbery occurred Sunday morning on the highway near village of La Paz in the town of Naga when two passengers declared the heist. The driver, Miguelito Lacanaria, was fatally shot by one of the robbers when he tried to grab the pistol of the assailant.
The shooting also injured Jovie Balucos, 30; and his daughter, who was shot in the head. Both passengers were rushed to hospital, but their condition remains unknown.
Police said the robbers collected personal belongings of the 11 other passengers and fled after the heist. The van was heading to Ipil town from the neighboring Buug town also in Zamboanga Sibugay.
Highway robberies are frequent on the 200-kilometer stretch of the Zamboanga highway which is extremely dangerous for motorists and travelers, especially at night, because of lack of street lights. Rebels and bandits are also actively operating in Zamboanga Peninsula. (Mindanao Examiner)
