ZAMBOANGA CITY – Suspected Abu Sayyaf militants freed a 44-year old mother they kidnapped in Zamboanga Sibugay province, but are still holding her husband and son in the southern province of Sulu.
Gunmen seized the family of three after storming their house in Payao town on August 5.
Police said the 42-year old Elmer Ronoc and his wife Nora, 44, a trader; and their son Ricson, 8, were taken from the village of Kulisap. The trio was spirited out on a motorboat and brought to Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.
The woman, who took a boat in Jolo and travelled to Zamboanga City arrived by bus Tuesday in her cousin’s house in Siay town also in Zamboanga Sibugay where she stayed for a while.
Authorities believed the woman’s relatives paid an unspecified amount of ransom to the Abu Sayyaf for her liberty and to raise money for the safe release of her husband and son. (Ely Dumaboc)
