ZAMBOANGA CITY – Government troops shot dead an Abu Sayyaf rebel following a gun battle in the southern Filipino province of Sulu, officials said Thursday.
Officials said Mahmur Jupuri engaged the troops manning a checkpoint in Indanan town and was eventually shot dead. Jupuri was travelling in a motorcycle with another man when soldiers spotted him.
Jupuri was reportedly behind several killings and kidnappings in Sulu and in nearby Sabah in Malaysia and was facing a string of murder and other criminal charges.
His body, according to officials, was taken by his family. Authorities have tagged the Abu Sayyaf as behind the series of ransom kidnappings and attacks on military targets in the southern region. (Mindanao Examiner)
