Sayyaf releases kidnapped teener

Desk Editor July 21, 2015

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Abu Sayyaf rebels have freed a teenager they kidnapped along with a three-year old boy after more than 3 months in captivity in the southern Philippines.

The 17-year old female victim was brought to Zamboanga City on Tuesday following her release in Sulu province on Monday. But the fate of the boy is still unclear and authorities did not release any information about the freed victim.

The two victims were kidnapped on March 31 in Zamboanga del Sur’s Pitogo town along with another three-year old boy, Zynielle Garban, whose body was found floating at sea. The boy’s body had a bullet wound.

The trio was seized by rebels after failing to kidnap a bakery owner in Pitogo town. Policemen also clashed with the kidnappers as they escaped on a motorboat.

The kidnaping came barely a week after armed men barged into the house of Naga town Mayor Gemma Adana and seized her. Provincial authorities have not released any information about the politician, but police and military previously tagged a breakaway group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Abu Sayyaf as behind the mayor’s kidnapping.
