ZAMBOANGA CITY – Suspected Abu Sayyaf militants killed three government soldiers in a daring attack Thursday in the town of Indanan in Sulu province in the Muslim autonomous region, officials said.
Officials said the attackers fled after killing the soldiers, who were buying food in the village of Manilop.
The identities of the slain soldiers were not made available by the military, but officials said they were all members of the Field Artillery Battalion attached to the Marine Battalion Landing Team-10 battling the Abu Sayyaf in the province.
Officials also did not say whether the victims were armed or not, however, troops responded to the shooting and recovered the bodies and brought them to the military base in the capital town of Jolo.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the military has blamed the Abu Sayyaf for the killings.
Security forces continue its operation against the Abu Sayyaf in Sulu and in nearby province of Basilan, also part of the Muslim autonomous region where militants are still holding over a dozen mostly foreign hostages kidnapped in southern Philippines and in Sabah, Malaysia.
The assault on the soldier occurred a day after a civilian was killed and 2 infantrymen were wounded in clashes between troops and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Datu Unsay town in Maguindanao, another province in the Muslim region. (Ely Dumaboc)
