MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / July 4, 2014) – An elderly Filipino Senator Juan Enrile has surrendered to authorities after a warrant for his arrest came out Friday. Enrile is the third senator, who was accused of pocketing kickbacks from his pork barrel funds, to surrender since last month.
The 90-year old Enrile was accompanied by his son, Jackie Enrile, a former congressman, who denied all the charges against his father, who was defense minister of President Ferdinand Marcos, who fled the Philippines after being ousted in a bloody coup in 1986.
Enrile, a former Senate president, still managed to wave his hand to a group of television journalists who waited outside the national police headquarters where he is being detained together with two other senators – Jose ‘Jinggoy’ Ejercito Jr and Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla, who are also facing similar charges.
Jessica Lucille “Gigi” Reyes, Enrile’s chief of staff who was implicated in the pork barrel funds scandal, also surrendered separately.
Enrile, a key figure during the Marcos martial law regime and a prominent lawyer, questioned the allegations against him. (Mindanao Examiner)
