DCI Steve Handley, who is leading the murder investigation, has also said officers are seeking a Peugeot 307 car with the registration MC57 BZP to aid with forensic investigations.
Residents have told police they saw the car travelling along Staniforth Road, Darnall, from the Attercliffe direction before the attack, travelling back the way it came a short time afterwards.
Reports from witnesses claim a group of Asian men attacked Mr Hussain with what are believed to be baseball bats.
DCI Handley said: “The sustained and brutal assault of Mr Hussain has shocked the local community and indeed, the wider city, so I want to reassure the public that our officers are working around the clock to identify those involved.”
DCI Handley also urged people to come forward to aid the investigation and prasied the community in Darnall for their help so far.
He said: “I’d like to thank the community of Darnall for their efforts so far in providing information to the police.
“We have pursued a number of lines of enquiry that proved successful so far in our investigations.
But I’d like to add that this attack took place in the middle of a busy road with vehicles manoeuvring around them.”
Three men have been arrested in connection with Mr Hussain’s death so far.
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday and remains in custody being questioned by officers.
A 28-year-old man was arrested on Sunday, January 3 on suspicion of murder. He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.
On Monday, January 4, a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He has also been bailed while the investigation continues.
It is believed the 20-year-old’s car hit Mr Hussain after he was attacked.(George Torr)
