MANILA – The Department of Justice has reminded telecommunications companies to be clear and truthful in their advertisements and at the same time advised consumers of their right to be informed of the details of the mobile or Internet services for subscription.
“Truth in advertising is an access issue. Economic justice requires that those who possess the information duly and timely disclose them,” Secretary of Justice Leila de Lima said.
De Lima has issued an Advisory calling on the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to monitor, enforce and implement sanctions on erring telecommunications companies under the Consumer Act and the Public Telecommunications Policy Act.
Assistant Secretary Geronimo Sy, head of the Office for Competition of the DOJ, said slow and expensive Internet service needs to be addressed for development to happen and it starts with fair pricing and fair use.
“Broadband speeds must be stated in the minimum rather than ‘up to’ with the level of service reliability in the same manner as telecommunication companies expect prompt payments,” he said.
