DAVAO CITY – The Philippine Army arrested a soldier accused of pilfering and selling ammunition to civilians in Mindanao, officials said on Monday.
Officials said Sergeant Jeffrey Ordoño, who trains candidate soldiers, is being held at the 10th Infantry Division in Davao City following his arrest.
Ordoño, assigned with the 10th Division Training School, has allegedly pilfered some 1,000 live ammunition and sold it to civilians.
The soldier is currently being investigated by the army, but officials did not say whether they have identified the civilians who illegally bought ammunition or not, or if any of them were members of a rebel group.
“Sergeant Ordoño is now detained at headquarters of the 10th Infantry Division for further investigation. He will be facing charges for violation of Articles of War 85 also known as “waste and unlawful disposition of military property”. If evidence warrants, he shall either undergo administrative or judicial proceedings which may include trial by court martial,” the army said.
It said Major General Rafael Valencia, chief of the 10th Infantry Division, has strongly warned soldiers against selling munitions, saying, “scalawags within the military organization shall be dealt with accordingly.”
There were previous allegations that soldiers had sold weapons and munitions to Abu Sayyaf and Moro Islamic Liberation Front and New People’s Army rebels and even criminal gangs in southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)
