ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 10, 2012) – Filipino security officials said one soldier, who was wounded in Abu Sayyaf bomb blasts in the southern province of Basilan, had died before reaching the hospital in Zamboanga City.

Officials said the number of those wounded in the explosions has climbed to 27 and five of them remain in critical condition in Zamboanga.

The soldiers were on a combat reconnaissance patrol inside a captured Abu Sayyaf camp in Sumisip town when they tripped on improvised explosives planted by the al-Qaeda linked terrorist group.

Most of the wounded soldiers are members of the Scout Rangers.

There were no reports of Abu Sayyaf casualties. Authorities have linked the group to the spate of terrorism and kidnappings for ransom in the southern Philippines. (Mindanao Examiner)
