COTABATO CITY – Philippine soldiers arrested two men who tried to blow up a police post late Friday in the restive southern province of Maguindanao, officials said.
Officials said the duo, Esmael Abdulkarem, 44; and Boy Kamid, 52, were immediately arrested after members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team in Shariff Aguak town spotted them leaving an improvised explosive at the outpost.
Both Abdulkarem, a local resident; and Kamid, from the town of Datu Hoffer, are currently being interrogated by the police. It was unknown whether they are rebels or supporters of the Islamic State.
A .45-caliber pistol was also seized from the duo, but officials said two other men managed to escape on a motorcycle and were being hunted down by soldiers and policemen.
Members of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion and the 57th Infantry Battalion cordoned off the outpost and disarmed the explosive assembled from a hand grenade and a 60-mm mortar round. The motive of the foiled attack is still unknown.
The governor of Maguindanao, Esmael Mangudadatu, did not release any statement. (Mindanao Examiner)
