
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Mar. 16, 2012) – Philippines authorities said three people were injured Friday after a strong eartquake shook the southern region of Mindanao.
Undersecretary Proceso Domingo, of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said the 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck at around 3:58 p.m. just 2 kilometers off Dinagat Island near Surigao del Norte province in the northeastern part of Mindanao.
He said the origin of the earthquake was tectonic and strongly felt in Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Bislig City, Davao City and Camiguin Island, all in southern Philippines; and in Samar in central Philippines.
Domingo said the quake also left cracks on the walls of Gaisano Mall and at the Surigao provincial gymnasium.
There were no reports of deaths, but radio station Bombo said as many as 23 mostly shoppers were hurt after a stampede inside the mall. It quoted Surigado del Norte Governor Sol Matugas as saying that most of those hurt were trying to run away from the building for their safety. (Mindanao Examiner)
