Southern Philippines mayor ambushed

PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Apr. 21, 2013) – Unidentified gunmen ambushed a political convoy in the southern Philippines, killing at least 2 people and wounding the mayor of Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental province, authorities said Sunday.

It said the attack, which wounded Mayor Ruthie Guingona, occurred late on Saturday. The political matriarch was heading home from a beauty pageant when gunmen ambushed her convoy that killed of two her followers.

Along time politician, who belongs to a powerful political dynasty is now on her last term, but is campaigning for her daughter, Marie, whom she is grooming to take her place. Guingona is the wife of former Vice President Teofisto Guingona and mother of Senator Teofisto Guingona III.

No group claimed responsibility for the ambush, but the province is a known lair of communist rebel group New People’s Army which have been fighting for decades for the establishment of a separate Maoist state. (Mindanao Examiner)
