ZAMBOANGA CITY – An old wooden street post toppled on a road Friday in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines and cutting off traffic for hours until utility workers managed to clear the area and erected a new pole.
No one was hurt when the pole came crushing down, but it forced motorists to detour from the usual busy Guiwan road. Several other poles were almost toppled down after cables snapped.
Workers from the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative were spotted untangling and fixing electrical cables as traffic enforcers closed the stretch of the road from motorists to allow uninterrupted maintenance work in the area.
Many street poles here are in danger of collapsing due to their old age and some were dangerously leaning and only supported by braces put up by the electric cooperative.
The utility firm is struggling to pay its huge debts and had been embroiled in scandals in the past that forced many of its officials to resign from their positions. (Mindanao Examiner)
