MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 6, 2012) – A 6.8-magnitude quake hit the Philippines on Monday and killing at least 7 people, including child, and authorities reported several damages to structure in the central province of Negros Oriental.
Other reports said as many as three dozen villagers were killed in the province.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake struck at around 11:49 a.m. in Tayasan town and that tremors were reported as far south as Butuan and Cagayan de Oro cities in Mindanao Island, and in Legaspi City in Albay in Luzon Island and Dumaguete, the nearest major city to the epicenter.
Authorities said an old building also collapsed in the town of La Libertad, but there were no reports of casualties as its occupants quickly rushed out of their offices.
President Benigno Aquino ordered authorities to monitor the affected areas for further seismic activity. (Mindanao Examiner)
