Subanen tribe in Zamboanga gets ceramic water filters

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Department of Science and Technology has distributed 30 ceramic water filters to members of the Subanen tribe in Zamboanga Sibugay province in southern Philippines.

It said the initial distribution of the locally-developed water filters benefited members of the Buug Subanen Workers Association just recently. It said 200 more ceramic water filters would also be distributed to poor families of selected indigenous people in Buug and Siayan town in the neighboring province of Zamboanga del Norte.

According to DOST, the water purification system is a simple technology that consists of a container and filtering medium, which is the ceramic pot filter that is made up of red clay and coated with nano-colloidal silver, an anti-microbial agent that replaces the chlorination process in traditional water filter systems.

The ceramic pot typically sits or hangs on the top of a large plastic container, which is fitted with a tap at the bottom. A lid is placed on top of the filter to prevent contamination.

The DOST said the system is capable of purifying tap water, deep well water, and raw water and convert these into safe drinking water.

Brenda Manzano, the DOST regional director, said the distribution of water filter to the indigenous communities is part of the so-called Community Empowerment through Science and Technology. (Mindanao Examiner)
