SULU – Governor Totoh Tan graced the opening of the WEmboree, a gathering of young people from different communities, academic institutions and organizations, which aims to encourage everyone to  come together, actively engage and inspire their peers and their respective communities to unite and become prime movers in nation-building.

Organizers said this concept will capacitate stakeholders to develop their noblest spiritual, moral, cultural, and social values, thus becoming responsible citizens and competent leaders of this country and at the same time promote and recognize the very essence of strong camaraderie among volunteers, may they be groups or individual.

Its aims to enable young people to engage at all levels in holistic activities while gaining both professional and recreational experiences, and inculcate in the hearts and minds of young Filipinos the importance of solidarity in pushing for societal reforms through making volunteerism their way of life resulting in good governance.

It also informs, prepare and enjoin the youth in helping or volunteering the challenges of disaster risk reduction and in the end, produce an effective information and communication strategy to advocate volunteerism among the youth on disaster resiliency.

In his speech, Tan thanked the organizers for inviting him to the event. He urged everyone to help each other not only in the community, but in nation-building.

“Hindi ko sinasabi na kalimutan ninyo ang inyong mga pansariling kapakanan. Ang sa akin lamang ay dapat rin natin isipin kung ano ang makakabuti sa ating bayan. Kung tayo ay sama-sama sa pagbuo at pagtuklas ng solusyon sa ating mga suliranin, wala pong dahilan na hindi natin mararating at makakamit ang ating mga mithiin para sa ating mahal na bayan,” he said.

Tan said only if young people will combine their collective talent and speak with one voice, instead of just focusing on one’s self, “I believe you will have a louder voice, loud enough that your leaders will find it difficult to ignore you. If you come together and join forces with each other, instead of just working and protecting your own self-interest, I believe you will become more relevant and will gain more important role to play in our society.”

“As your governor, I ensure that whenever the youth of our province conducts worthwhile activities, they surely will have our support. Many of you here can attest to this because you know that whenever my schedule allows me to join you, I am always there. Let it not be forgotten, that we all have our roles to play in our community. As we play our roles to the best of our ability, our common goal should always be for the benefit of our people,” Tan added. (Ahl-franzie Salinas)
