ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 23, 2013) – The Department of Trade said it will hold a symposium on the Senior Citizens Act or Republic Act 9994 in Zamboanga City following widespread complaints that commercial establishments, including pharmacies and restaurants, refused to abide by the law, which provides 20% discounts.

The DTI has urged the public, particularly senior citizens, and business owners to attend and take part in the August 2 symposium which would be held at the Grand Astoria Hotel.

Trade director Rolando Acuña said they are also receive reports from restaurant owners that some senior citizens misuse the discount on food accorded them by passing their privilege to relatives who are not senior citizens and not entitled to discounts.

“We feel it is important to bring together in one venue the parties involved and affected by this so we could clarify the privileges and the responsibilities of each under the Senior Citizens Act,” Acuña said.

He said those who are interested to attend the symposium can call the DTU at telephone number (062) 991-2704 up to 05. (Lowell Vallecer)
