Taxi driver in Najadi murder walks free – The Star

Editor February 12, 2016

The taxi driver, who allegedly ferried the suspected killer of banker Hussain Ahmad Najadi, walks out of court a free man.

This came after the Court of Appeal allowed Chew Siang Chee’s appeal against his conviction and sentence Friday.

Court of Appeal judge Justice Md Raus Shariff said the decision was unanimous.

Justice Md Raus said the court agreed with the defence that the charge was not proven.

Chew, 46, filed an appeal against his conviction and 14 years’ jail term and six strokes of the rotan for possessing a Walther pistol, a magazine and four bullets.

The two offences were allegedly committed at Desa Cindaimas condominium in Jalan Kuchai Lama at about 5.45pm on Aug 3, 2013.

On Feb 17, 2014 Sessions Court Judge Azwarnida Affandi sentenced Chew to 10 years’ jail and six strokes of the rotan for possessing a pistol and another four years for the possession of live bullets.

Judge Azwarnida instructed the sentence to be served consecutively from July 30, 2013, the day Chew was detained.

Chew then filed an appeal to set aside his conviction and sentence at the High Court but was dismissed by Justice Mohd Azman Husin on Sept 4.

Justice Mohd Azman made the ruling on the grounds that the Sessions Court judge had not erred in making the decision.

However, he amended the jail sentence to run concurrently.

On Aug 19, last year, the Court of Appeal ordered the High Court to rehear Chew’s appeal before a different judge.

On July 29, 2013, Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder Najadi, 76, was shot dead while his wife was seriously injured when they emerged from the Kuan Yin Temple in Lorong Ceylon.

A gunman who crept from behind, fired randomly at Najadi and his 50-year-old wife at close range, killing the renowned banker on the spot near a car park.(MAIZATUL NAZLINA)
