SULTAN KUDARAT – Policemen, backed by government soldiers, captured a rebel tagged as behind the killing of two infantrymen in Cotabato City in southern Philippines, officials said on Monday.
Officials said Zainudin Kawilan was captured after security forces raided his hideout in the remote village of Timbangan in Maguindanao’s Shariff Aguak town.
Troops from the 45th Infantry Battalion headed by Lt. Col. Romeo Bautista also recovered a shot gun, a 60 millimeter mortar bomb and a fragmentation grenade from Kawilan’s hideout.
Officials said Kawilan is a member of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters under Sukarno Sapal and has been tagged as the killer of two soldiers who were fatally shot while guarding the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center on October 22.
The soldiers were shot by Kawilan who pretended to visit a patient at the hospital. Troops tracked down Kawilan in the village after civilians tipped off authorities about his presence in the area. (Rose Muneza)
