COTABATO CITY – A group of soldiers and policemen escaped unscathed following a grenade attack Friday in the province of Maguindanao in the troubled Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said security personnel were inspecting a suspected improvised explosive – which turned out to be a decoy to lure soldiers and policemen -in the village of Labu-Labu in Shariff Aguak town when an unidentified man hurled the MK2 grenade which exploded several meters away from them.
The blast damaged a police truck parked near where the explosion occurred.
Capt. Jo Ann Petinglay, a spokeswoman for the 6th Infantry Division, said the attack may been carried out by Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in retaliation to the continued operation against the rebel group tagged as behind the series of terrorism.
She said authorities were investigating the attack. (Mindanao Examiner, Mark Navales)
