CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Government troops clashed Saturday with communist rebels in the southern Philippine city of Malaybalay, but security officials said there were no reports of casualties, but a separate operation led to the capture of a rebel commander in Surigao del Sur.
Officials said the fighting erupted in the village of Capitan Angel after New People’s Army attacked patrolling troops and sparking a 10-minute firefight. The rebels fled after the clashes.
The military is also holding Robert Laurante Rivas, Jr, who is an NPA leader in Lianga town where he and his companion Jojean Alameda had been arrested. The duo was travelling on a motorcycle when troops nabbed them.
Officials said soldiers seized an improvised explosive, a handgun, one blasting cap and 27 meters of firing wire from the duo.
The rebel group have fighting for many decades now for the establishment of a communist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
