PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 27, 2012) – A multi-awarded mining firm, TVI Resource Development (Phils.) Inc. has deployed a new school bus for students in Zamboanga del Norte province in the southern Philippines as part of its community support.

The school bus will benefit Canatuan Elementary and High School students.

TVIRD operates in Mount Canatuan in the town of Siocon and also in Balabag Hill in Zamboanga del Sur’s Bayog town.

Just this year, TVIRD, the local affiliate of the Canadian mining firm TVI Pacific, Inc., bested other large mining companies in the Philippines in its respective metallic category when it won the Safest Mining Operations award for the second year in a row in the Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference held in Baguio City on November 16.

It also bagged the equally prestigious Platinum Award for excellence in environmental management, the highest accolade achieved under the Surface Mining Operations category; and Safest Surface Mining Operation, Safest Mineral Processing-Concentrator category and 3rd runner-up for the Best Mining Forest in the metallic category.

Among all the mining companies, only TVIRD bagged the most awards in the surface metallic mining category– 5 awards – basing only from the performances of its lone operating mine site in Mount Canatuan.

Last year, TVIRD also received the Titanium Award for Environmental Management and 3 other safety awards, including the Best Employer in the Zamboanga and in Western Mindanao given by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

It also awarded its 8th Gawad Kalinga Award and the DOLE Secretary’s Award of Distinction to TVIRD. The national award is in recognition of the outstanding achievement of establishments and individuals in terms of responding to the safety and health needs of workers, workplaces and community.

The awards are conferred yearly by the Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award to mining companies to recognize outstanding levels of dedication, initiative, and innovation in the pursuit of excellence in environmental management as mining companies explore and utilize the minerals of the country. And the scope of environmental management includes programs being implemented for the environment, development of the host and impact communities and land use improvement after the mine decommissioning.
