ZAMBOANGA CITY – A villager, who was illegally manufacturing homemade bomb, is in serious condition after an explosion inside his house in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, officials said Thursday.
Inspector Dahlan Samuddin, a regional police spokesman, said the 33-year Muallam Hassan, was rushed to hospital after improvised dynamite exploded in his hands on December 31 in Tumitus village.
“Initial investigation disclosed that the victim was making improvised dynamite explosives when it went off accidentally while still in his hands,” Samuddin said.
He said police are investigating the explosion and Hassan’s background.
Many fishermen in Zamboanga are engaged in blast fishing mostly from homemade explosives made from ammonium nitrate and blasting cap which is banned in the Philippines.
The chemical is also being used by rebels in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices. (Mindanao Examiner)
