GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The Villar Foundation handed one compost machine to
the village of Calumpang in General Santos City in southern Philippines.
The machine, worth P700,000, was originally sourced by Mayor Ronnel Rivera from Senators Manny and Cynthia Villar as part of the local government’s cleanliness drive for the community and to provide necessary livelihood for its constituents as well.
Rivera said he has been talking to Senator Cynthia Villar, who heads the Committee Agriculture and Food, regarding possible livelihood projects that can be given to the city. The compost machine was the first one to be given, the mayor said.
He said the compost machine will be managed by a cooperative. He already tasked Council member Dominador Lagare III, chairman of the Committee on Cooperatives, Economic Enterprises and Livelihood, to keep a close eye on project.
The village of Calumpang has three public markets and it generates a fair amount of trash every day and the compost machine will be efficient in converting these wastes into fertilizers that farmers could also use. The machine also has a faster mechanism for decomposing waste products. (Ian John Lagare)
