
ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 30, 2013) – A whirlwind struck a small community in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines destroying several houses, but there were no reports of casualties, local government officials said.
Dozens of families were affected by the whirlwind which hit the remote community in Layag-Layag in the village of Talon-Talon before midnight on Thursday.
The local social welfare office said 6 houses were totally destroyed by the whirlwind. It said more than 240 villagers were affected in the Layag-Layag. Police blamed storm surge for the destruction of the houses.
Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Salazar inspected the area and handed out relief goods and food packs to those affected by the freak weather phenomena. (With a report from Ely Dumaboc)
