THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT of Zamboanga is set to relocate informal settlers, especially those near riverbanks and other areas exposed to geological hazards, as part of a contingency and safety plan following the recent flash floods that affected over 1,400 families here.
Mayor Beng Climaco said the Zamboanga City Housing and Land Management Division has continue tagging informal settlers, especially those occupying private properties, in preparation for their eventual relocation.

“We will have to seek relocation as a solution. We will be writing the private lot owners to inform them about the situation so that they themselves should secure their properties from squatters,” Climaco said.
“Busca anay quita lote onde canila man relocate,” she added, saying, the local Housing and Land Management Division will also have to conduct “social preparation” on all informal settlers prior to their actual relocation in the future.
Many barangays in Zamboanga, especially San Jose Gusu, Tetuan, Tumaga, Sangali, Lunzuran, Tugbungan, Putik, Pasonanca and Baliwasan, were underwater after typhoon Marilyn (international name In-fa) ravaged the country. In Zamboanga City alone, the damage to agricultural crops and infrastructures reached at least P28 million. Climaco led the distribution of humanitarian aid to the displaced families.
