ZAMBOANGA CITY – While popular Mayor Beng Climaco is busy with her day-to-day work as a public servant, traditional politician Celso Lobregat is also busy with his slew of media propaganda talking about re-cycled issues and throwing unfounded accusations and allegations against the local chief executive.
“Celso is burning his energy to the max, spreading propaganda as usual so as to stay afloat on the media scene. He makes issues about traffic schemes, garbage trucks, city council resolutions, and even the medicines we distribute to the poor and criticize our pro-poor programs and projects. Is this the kind of politician you would entrust your future?” Mayor Beng Climaco said when asked about her reaction to Lobregat’s guesting and allegations he made recently on TV 11.
Lobregat, in his previous guesting on TV 11, nearly walked out from the show after he parried battery of questions – in response to his criticisms of the good mayor – posed by veteran anchors of the number one television station in Zamboanga City.
He even accused one of the anchors as a spokesman for Mayor Beng and ordered television executives not to allow Charlie Mariano, his former supporter and now a spokesperson for the political team of the good mayor. The traditional politician seems wanting media members to just listen to his propaganda and report it as is with no questions asked of him.
Councilman Rommel Agan also challenged Lobregat to a public debate on the Talisayan resettlement project, but there had been no reply from the traditional politician.
Lobregat is trying desperately to stop the 12-hectare Talisayan resettlement project, saying, the local government should have used existing relocation sites. He even said the area is prone to tsunami, but deliberately omitted many other locations in Zamboanga which have edifices and residential areas are also prone to seismic sea wave because of the city’s topography.
City Assessor Edwin Bernardo also defended the Talisayan resettlement project and strongly said that it is above board and has strictly followed correct procedures, belying Lobregat’s allegations that the local government would be spending too much for the relocation site.
Supporters of Mayor Beng have asked Lobregat to explain the huge amount of funding in the construction of the controversial Limaong Bridge, the purchase of JAC pickup trucks, the CCTVs, the steel CL logo on government buildings and painted signs “Adelante Zamboanga” on roofs of government buildings, and also the so-called “dancing fountain” at Paseo del Mar and the park itself, among other infrastructure projects during his 9 years as mayors.
The traditional politician has been accused of meddling in the affairs of the local government and had questioned many times resolutions of the city council which favor pro-poor programs and projects of Mayor Beng.
He even criticized the Largo Vida project for senior citizens. Largo Vida, which literally means “Long Life”, is part of Mayor Beng’s benevolent programs dedicated for the welfare of senior citizens. It is being implemented by the City Health Office, City Social Welfare and Development Office and Office of the City Mayor.
After criticizing the program, Lobregat and his party mates tried hard and copied the same. Lobregat and his team have been going around different barangays and meeting with senior citizens and even campaigning this early and distributing 2 kilos of rice and a red sling bag with his name printed on it.
