ZAMBOANGA CITY Mayor Beng Climaco has pledged her all-out support to lawmaker Celso Lobregat to run again in Congress in next year’s polls.
Climaco said if there is anyone most fitted and deserving to represent the “voice of Zamboanga City” in Congress, it’s no other but Lobregat, who already served 9 years as mayor of Zamboanga.
She said she would also run for re-election under President Aquino’s Liberal Party. Lobregat belongs to the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino.
Climaco said she considers the wealthy Lobregat as a “big brother” and wanted him to succeed in Congress as Zamboanga’s congressman in District 1. Representative Lilia Nuno is the congresswoman in District 2.
“Lobregat has been doing his fare share to speak for and represent the voice of Zamboanga City in the House of Representatives. In fact, I think there was a gathering where he Lobregat spoke about his (2007) defence of Zamboanga City in the Supreme Court, and his eloquence is needed in the halls of congress,” Climaco said.
“As a big brother to me, he has already served mayor of this city for nine years and I, his little sister, as a woman would want to continue serving as mayor of this city. Let Zamboanga be in the care of a mother, because together we will be able to help build a better Zamboangueño family if God allows and the people will give us the mandate,” she added.
Majority of the locals in 98 villages in Zamboanga support Climaco’s re-election bid, but Lobregat also wants to run again as mayor.
In 2013, Climaco ran and won after Lobregat’s term ended. Lobregat’s brother Jomar also ran against Nuno, but lost. Lobregat also previously served as congressman when his mother, Maria Clara Lobregat, ruled Zamboanga for many years as congresswoman and mayor until her death in January 2004. (Mindanao Examiner)
