ZAMBOANGA CITY – The local government is planning to put up public parking areas and has begun scouting for idle lands to augment the limited parking space in downtown Zamboanga.
Assistant City Administrator Cesar Raz said one area suitable for parking zone is Centro Pastoral near the KCC Mall de Zamboanga and initial talks have already been made with the Archdiocese of Zamboanga.
He said they are also eyeing several areas as public parking space and among them are the 1.7-hectare property of the Zamboanga City Water District in the west coast and the vacant lot at the Integrated Bus Terminal in Divisoria, and the property near Ledesma Street which is about one hectare and talks have already been finalized with the owners who are willing to convert it into a parking area.
Raz said the local government will also continue its efforts to clear public roads of illegal structures and obstructions to ease the flow of traffic. “Our efforts are continuing. We clear public roads of all illegal structures and obstructions, including illegal parking of vehicles on the roads and at the same time find areas that we can develop into public parking spaces,” he said.
Mayor Beng Climaco previously said that the local government will sustain the campaign in support to President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to clear all public roads of obstructions.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has commended Climaco and the local government of Zamboanga for its efforts in implementing Duterte’s order.
Paizal Abutazil, the DILG regional director for Western Mindanao, said Zamboanga City obtained 90 points – the highest points beyond the passing mark set by the national government, and praising the local government efforts and Climaco.
Abutazil led the validating team of the national government in Zamboanga and the following criteria were the basis of the rating: Ordinance, wherein the City scored 14 out of 15 points; Inventory- the City got a perfect score of 5; Road Clearing – the local government got 45 out of 50 points; Displacement Program earned for Zamboanga 8 out of 10 points; Rehabilitation Efforts gave the City Government 13 out of 15 points; and Grievance Mechanism with a perfect score of 5 for a total points of 90.
Climaco thanked the validating team and Zamboanga passed with flying colors, saying, the accolades should go to all the barangay officials, the citizens and those who contributed to the “united” efforts of the Zamboangueños.
“We will sustain the momentum that we have in our efforts to keep our roads cleared of any obstructions. This will be a nonstop campaign,” she said. (Zamboanga Post)
