ZAMBOANGA CITY – Despite the challenges, Zamboanga City is indeed building back better. From an overall rank of 74th in 2014, Zamboanga City now ranks 15th among Highly Urbanized Cities and 14th among all cities all over the Philippines based on the results of the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index released during the 3rd Regional Competitiveness Summit held at the PICC in Manila on July 16.

Rankings of Cities and Municipalities are based on the sum of their scores on 3 Pillars: Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, and Infrastructure.

Zamboanga City is third in infrastructure, 15th in Government Efficiency and 26th in Economic Dynamism.

Mayor Beng Climaco led the Zamboanga delegation composed of government and non-government representatives in receiving the award from the National Competitiveness Council (NCC) co-chaired by Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo (public sector) and Ayala Corporation Associate Director Guillermo Luz (private sector).

The Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index presents economic development and competitiveness indicators at the local government levels. The index is composed of roughly 30 weighted indicators measuring economic dynamism, government efficiency and infrastructure.

The NCC was first known as the Public-Private Sector Task Force on Philippine Competitiveness created through Presidential Executive Order 571 on October 2006. With an expanding membership, the task force was renamed NCC through EO No. 44 amending EO 571 in June 2011.

The NCC’s vision is to promote a more competitive Philippines and instil a culture of excellence, through public-private sector collaboration as means to reduce poverty through inclusive growth. Its mission is to implement the action agenda with private sector initiatives that support public policies. (Sheila Covarrubias)
