Zamboanga City News Bits – April 27, 2015
- The Supreme Court (SC) in an en banc resolution approved on March 24, 2015 has clarified that in no case shall the accused Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) members be brought back to Zamboanga during the course of the trial of cases pertaining to their alleged involvement in the 2013 siege. City Legal officer retired Judge Jesus Carbon said the SC clarification was in answer to Mayor Climaco’s September 15, 2014 letter asking if the accused MNLF be brought back to the city following the SC resolution saying that the witnesses for the prosecution can testify here in the city.
- The city’s legal team led by retired Judge Carbon has been instructed by Mayor Beng Climaco to seriously study the plea bargaining offer of the more or less 250 MNLF members charged with sedition in connection with the Zamboanga siege in September 2013. Carbon told the press briefing in City Hall on Monday that Mayor Climaco’s specific instruction was for the City Legal Office to study whether or not the City or the people in general will benefit from the MNLF’s plea bargaining offer in case the city government will accept it. He said the mayor’s first reaction was against the plea bargaining offer.
- Malacañang has approved the City Government’s request for the allocation of P50 million to support requirements at the temporary shelters. The amount will be used to settle the city’s obligations on utilities with the Zamboanga City Water District, Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative, Inc., and private firms that have been carrying out dislodging activities for the different evacuation and transitory sites. It will also be used for the improvement of access roads to the Mampang TS, according to Assistant City Administrator Elmeir Apolinario, who heads the temporary shelter cluster.
- A job fair and the full array of the Dia de Alcalde services will mark this year’s Labor Day or Dia de Obrero observance in Zamboanga City on Friday, May 1. Organized by the Department of Labor and Employment in partnership with the City Government of Zamboanga and the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone, the Dia de Obrero will be held at the Ecozone Grounds with the theme “Disenteng Trabaho at Kabuhayan Alay Natin sa Bayan”. The Dia de Obrero will feature job and livelihood fairs, motorcade, a diskwento fair and market market, TESDA skills demo, medical and dental outreach, the launch of job search kiosk, and turnover of kabuhayan starter kits. There will be around 27,000 job vacancies up for grabs for both overseas and local employment.
- Even as the city experienced rains the past days, the water level at the water treatment plant in Pasonanca remains unstable and thus requires continuation of the water rationing scheme. Zamboanga City Water District Water Quality Division Manager Teddy Sarmiento said however, water supply is extended whenever the water level is adequate.
- The ACF has completed four units of improved dug well at Masepla transitory site 2 for flushing and cleaning of latrines and bathing cubicles. Construction of similar facilities in Masepla 1 is ongoing. The UNICEF and ACF will initiate re-orientation with the WaSH (Water, Sanitation and Health) committee and camp managers next week. This is to maximize the use of water deliveries for drinking and cooking while keeping sanitation in control in Masepla.
