Zamboanga City Government News Bits – May 11, 2015
- Mayor Beng Climaco invites all sectors including the barangays, parishes, CSOs, academe and all concerned citizens to actively participate in the Senate hearing on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law to be presided by Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos on Thursday, May 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Royce convention Hall, Grand Astoria Hotel and to remain united in the city’s stand on the Bangsamoro issue.
- The City Health Office has stepped up advocacy on HIV-AIDS in a bid to curb and control the rising number of HIV cases in the city. Assistant City Health Officer Dr. Kibtiya Uddin said the increasing cases of HIV and other sexually-transmitted diseases has marked Zamboanga City as one of the risk cities in the country thus necessitating a more intensified HIV and AIDS response. Based on figures culled from the 2013 HIV Surveillance conducted by the CHO, the City’s HIV prevalence rate is 2.7%, placing it as a risk city.
- The CHO spearheads the conduct of free and confidential HIV-testing from 4-7 p.m., May 11-15 at the CHO-Reproductive Health and Wellness Center in line with the observance of National HIV-testing Week. The 1st City AIDS Congress and International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is also set on May 14 to raise awareness, encourage HIV testing for early detection and treatment, and control the spread of HIV.
- Eighty percent of the 23 exhibitors who participated in the 12th CAEXPO promotional conference and trade fair at Centro Latino are ready for the China market while the rest need to be improved in terms of packaging and shelf life. The promo conference was part of the city’s preparation for the CAEXPO event slated in September in Nanning, China where Zamboanga was chosen as the City of Charms.
- Preparations for the closure of the evacuation center at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex have been intensified. However, the closure will only take place with the movement of internally displaced persons to transitory sites following the required social preparation and physical preparation in the transfer sites.
- Elmeir Apolinario on Monday took his oath of office before Mayor Beng Climaco as the department head of the newly-created City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO). He is the concurrent assistant City Administrator.
- Activities for the 2015 Summer Festival continue with the purpose of involving the community and providing wholesome entertainment to local residents as well as visitors during summer. These include Hip-hop final competition – 4 p.m., May 13 at Paseo del Mar; Dia de Gen. Vicente Alvarez- 7:30 a.m., May 18 at Plaza Vicente Alvarez; Juego de Antes -2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., May 19 at Paseo del Mar; Danza Verano- 4 p.m., May 23 at Paseo del Mar and Freedom Run – 5 a.m., May 24 at Climaco Freedom Park, Pasonanca.
