  • Zamboanga City commemorates Monday, May 18, Dia de Gen. Vicente Alvarez, the only Zamboangueno revolutionary hero, whose gallantry led to the surrender of Spanish soldiers in 1899. The simple yet meaningful ceremony will kick off with the wreath-laying rites at 7:30 a.m. at Plaza Gen. Vicente Alvarez (fronting Plaza Pershing) to be followed by a program at 8 a.m. in front of City Hall and exhibit of winning entries to the photo essay competition at the City Hall lobby. A mass will be held in his honor at 5 p.m. at the Fort Pilar Shrine. The observance of Dia de Gen. Alvarez is pursuant to City Ordinance 334 naming Plaza Roma situated at the corner of Zaragoza St. and Gen. Alvarez St. as Plaza Vicente S. Alvarez and setting May 18 of every year as Dia de Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez in recognition of his feats.
  • The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will turn over to beneficiaries through the City Government 200 units of 50 horse power pump boat engines and certificate of award for 4 units of Community Fish Landing Centers with a cost of P3 million per project site. The turnover will be held Monday, May 18 during the flag raising ceremony in front of City Hall.
  • Brigada Eskwela, a school cleanup program to prepare for the coming school year will kick off Monday, May 18 at the Masepla Transitory Site in Barangay Mampang. It will be preceded by a motorcade from the Department of Education – City Office in Baliwasan. Spearheaded by the Department of Education, Western Mindanao State University and UNICEF, Brigada Eskwela 2015 in Zamboanga highlights the effort to ensure efficient and effective education to children of all abilities regardless of age, religion, race or economic status. Masepla, currently the biggest transitory site in the Zamboanga Response, has 4 temporary learning centers operated by the UNICEF in partnership with WMSU, under the so-called composite school system.
  • The National Housing Authority (NHA) on Saturday formally turned over to the local government and to the beneficiaries the remaining 84 permanent houses on stilts, completing the total 200 units constructed under the Z3R program in Taluksangay. Mayor Beng Climaco, District II Cong. Lilia Nuno and NHA District Manager Al Indanan spearheaded the ceremonial turnover. The initial 116 houses on stilts were turned over to the beneficiaries during ceremonies held Feb. 26 coinciding with the celebration of Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga.
  • Hordes of people – young and old – flocked Paseo del Mar last Saturday, May 16 for the Juego de Antes, the Summer Festival highlight that featured group and individual games played by youngsters of yesteryears. Winners to the different games received cash prizes and plaques.
  • The Tricycle Adjudication Board reiterates its call for all tricycle operators to renew franchises for the operation of tricycles within the territorial jurisdiction of Zamboanga City. The deadline is set on May 31, 2015 pursuant to City Council resolution 518.

The COMELEC-City Office reminds all registered voters whose biometrics data have not been captured or those with incomplete biometric data to submit themselves for validation on or before October 31, 2015 otherwise they will not be allowed to vote in the May 2016 synchronized elections.
