Zamboanga City News Bits – April 24, 2015

Desk Editor April 25, 2015

Zamboanga City News Bits – April 24, 2015

  • Mayor Beng Climaco today convened the City Peace and Order Council to tackle pressing issues concerning peace and security and other related matters. Among the issues discussed were the crime situation, anti-drug operations, campaign against loose firearms, presence of threat groups, the City’s Peace and Order and Public Safety Plan for 2013-2016 and other issues.
  • Mayor Climaco has outrightly rejected the guilty plea of MNLF members accused in the Sept. 2013 siege as she defended the City’s stand and continuously clamored for justice. She likewise reiterated the need to act intelligently and with utmost prudence. The plea bargaining proposal of the MNLF members would entail lesser penalties or sanctions. The mayor restated the continued clamor of the City for justice commensurate to the damages and trauma caused by the siege which killed 38 security forces and civilians, wounded 266, and displaced 22,196 families.
  • DSWD Assistant Secretary Vilma Cabrera formally handed over to Mayor Beng Climaco and City Social Welfare Officer Sokee Rojas the Camp Coordination and Camp Management responsibilities but committed to continuously support and assist the city in the recovery and rehabilitation efforts. The handover ceremony was held at the City Hall conference room Friday morning.
  • The Masepla Transitory Site 3 in Mampang is now fully operational with the turnover Friday afternoon of the 400 newly-constructed recovery shelters with funding support from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). DSWD Asst. Secretary Cabrera presided over the turnover ceremony Friday afternoon. The temporary shelters were constructed by the International Organization for Migration.
  • Mindanao Development Authority (MINDA) Chairperson Luwalhati Antonino called on the Mayor at City Hall on Friday where issues concerning projects for the City were discussed. Antonino asked Mayor Climaco to submit project proposals for funding by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority where she sits as member of the Board. The Mayor, meanwhile, turned over to the MINDA Chairperson a cheque representing part of the City’s assistance to Yolanda victims.
